YOU HAVE TO READ THIS LETTER!!!
Earlier this week my dad, who just retired from the choir (MoTab), received a copy of a letter originally sent to Mack Wilberg, conductor of the MoTab, from a member in England. He was sent a copy of it, well.... you'll see. YOU HAVE TO READ THIS LETTER. When I read it the first time I was crying because I was laughing so hard. Here it is... Unchanged, and directly quoted-
Dr. Mack Wilberg
Conductor
Mormon Tabernacle Choir
Dear Brother Wilberg,
We wonder if we might interrupt your busy schedule for just a moment and ask you to pass on our grateful thanks to one of the members of your choir who has been an inspiration and a means of diversion to our family over the years.
We are the Siu family of the Wembley Ward of the England Watford Stake in England. When our three children were small, watching conference could be a trial. Two hours was a long time for little minds and hands to be quiet and we constantly thought up ways to keep them interested in the conference proceedings. One idea we had was to choose a member of your choir and while the hymns and songs were being sung, the children would look out for this person to come into camera shot and count how many times they saw him. Now, I don't know how we came to choose the person we did, but for the past several years or so, we have looked out for him.
I have been meaning to write to you to ask you to thank him but it has been difficult to ascertain where he was in the choir each conference as the camera shots from a distance are not very detailed. However, this past conference we managed to spot him. If you were facing the choir (as you do), he was the last man on the extreme right, in the second row of a row of five men. You can't really miss him. His is a very fine looking, tall, fellow with what we think is red hair with a lovely moustache to match (colours do not always come out very well on video).
Over the years we have made up stories about him. We think he could be Canadian and we call him Chuck! All in all, he doesn't seem to have aged over the years and looks as young as ever he did.
Do you think you can identify this man and pass on our thanks to him for a wonderful service to the Siu Family?
For his interest, our children are Pilip aged 23, who served a mission in South Africa, now studying law at university, Alistair aged 19, currently serving in the England Birmingham Mission (and still looking out for Chuck at conference) and Stephanie aged 15, still at school.
We hope to be able to spot our friend for many years to come. Who knows maybe if we are blessed with grandchildren one day, they too will be looking out for him.
I appreciate this must be a strange letter to receive but we hope you can pass on our thanks to Chuck and to all the members of your wonderful choir.
With our very best wishes
Sister Debra Siu"
Of course "Chuck" the never-aging Canadian is my dad. And once Mack Wilberg read it, he told the choir secretary to send a copy of the letter to "Chuck".
It's just so cool that the world can be that big and have billions of people in it... But out there in it, Sister Debra Siu picked my dad as the guy to make up stories about. It's just weird and cool how we're all still connected to some degree. Congratulations dad, changing the world one family at a time. :!)
